The Board of Directors of Guilford Native American Association
is proud to nominate Tyler Wellington Thomas (Lumbee) for the
Indian Student of the Year Award to be presented at the 30th
Annual North Carolina Indian Unity Conference.
Tyler is an outstanding Indian high school senior who is proud
of his heritage and has been involved in youth activities at

American Youth Initiative and was selected in 2004 for an internship
in Washington, DC for Native American students from throughout

Indian Educator of the YearAward...
Velina Hammond-Ebert (Lumbee)
Nominated by: Board of Directors, Guilford Native American
Association
The Board of Directors of Guilford Native American Association
is pleased to nominate Velina Hammond-Ebert (Lumbee) for the
Indian Educator of the Year Award.
Ms. Hammond-Ebert has distinguished herself in the field of
education and particularly in Indian Education at the local,
state and national levels. She holds both undergraduate and
graduate degrees in education and counseling, and has taught
and served as a counselor in the Guilford County School System
and Guilford Technical Community College. She works extensively
with GNAA and the Guilford County Indian Education Program.
Her expertise is invaluable to both our programs. She is the
GNAA representative to the State Advisory Council on Indian
Education whose task is to prepare annual reports for the North
Carolina Department of Public Instruction. She also serves on
the GNAA Education Committee and assists with our annual Indian
Education Community Forum.
She is often called upon to provide advice and counseling to
Indian students and parents in the Triad region and in her native
Robeson County where she maintains close ties. Ms. Ebert was
instrumental in planning the National Indian Education Convention
held in Greensboro in November of 2003. She is passionate about
Indian education and devotes much of her time to the cause.
Her devotion and expertise have aided tremendously in the educational
progress of our Indian youth and adults statewide and nationally.
She is deserving of recognition in this field.
For these reasons we are proud and honored to nominate her
for this special award.
Thank you.
