Greetings from Wake Forest University!
Please encourage your colleagues and interested community members to
take advantage of Professor David Wilkins' survey seminar on American
Indian Sovereignty, June 13th to June 30th, 2005.
Our planning committee has worked very hard to make this important
seminar accessible and affordable to students and working adults alike.
Please note that we have changed the seminar lectures to an afternoon
time slot to assist commuting participants.
The seminar lectures will take place 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm beginning June
15th. Participants will have ample opportunities for collaborative
efforts, to meet for individual consultations with Professor Wilkins,
and to use Wake Forest University research resources in the morning. We
will offer assistance in the pursuit of research projects throughout the seminar.
On June 13th and 14th, we will offer introductions to our research
resources, a tour of the campus, a cultural workshop and social events.
This will allow the participants to meet each other and with Professor
Wilkins in a relaxed setting and to familiarize themselves with our campus
facilities.
A barbecue dinner will be hosted on the evening of June 14th to welcome
Professor Wilkins and to honor his efforts on behalf of American Indian Sovereignty.
An information packet and parking sticker will be sent to registered students.
The auditing fee for the seminar is $150.00 plus costs for required
reading materials. We have reserved special apartment housing for
auditing community participants with kitchen and lounge space at the
price of $100.00 per room per week. Certificates for CEU will be
issued. For students requiring credit hours, the cost is $500.00 per
credit hour. Students will be required to apply for regular student
housing through the office for summer school housing.
For further information, please consult the enclosed flyer or send me an email at wiethaus@wfu.edu.
Thank you so much for your interest in the seminar. Our Wake Forest
University community is looking forward to seeing you and your colleagues
in June!
With all the best wishes,
Ulrike Wiethaus --

"Crossing between Worlds: the Diné (Navajos) of Canyon de Chelly" is open to the public at the Guilford Native American Art Gallery at 200 N. Davie Street in Greensboro also from December 5, 2004 through February 28, 2005. The exhibit features 25 black-and-white photographs documenting the activities and environment of Diné families in Canyon de Chelly, located in northeastern Arizona. The Diné, commonly known as Navajos, have lived as herders for centuries in this area dotted with ancient cliff dwellings. The curator for the exhibit is Jeanne Simonelli, chair of Wake Forest's anthropology department. The exhibit is based on the book Crossing between Worlds by Simonelli and photographer Charles Winters. Simonelli worked as a park ranger in Canyon de Chelly, and the book and the exhibit mix stories about her personal experiences there with information about the native history and culture in the region. This exhibition is featured in collaboration with the Wake Forest University Museum of Anthropology ~ Stephen L. Whittington, Ph. D., Director.

GREENSBORO -- Lonnie Revels worked to fight racism, and hoped for a better life for his fellow Lumbee Indians. Those who attended his memorial service Sunday said he did most of that work with his mouth. "He could talk about sports, or he could talk about Jesus," said the Rev. Kenneth Locklear. "But it would always come back to business or politics." Locklear stood before several hundred people at the West Market Street United Methodist Church in Greensboro. He was not the only speaker to mention Revels' willing attitude when it came to giving advice, whether for a minute or an afternoon. Revels, who died Thursday at 67, was a former Greensboro City Council member and charter member of the state's Commission on Indian Affairs. "Lonnie always had advice for you, whether you asked for it or not," said state Rep. Alma Adams. The remark drew many laughs during the 90-minute service, where Revels was also showered with much respect. With his wife, Ruth, Revels was a founder of the Guilford Native American Association, and for most of his life worked for federal recognition of the state's 50,000 Lumbee Indians. "Lonnie Revels stood for what was right," Adams said. "And he worked hard to make others accountable for what was right, too." The Lumbee tribe is the largest group of American Indians east of the Mississippi River that is not fully recognized by the federal government. "Lonnie did more (for the Lumbee tribe) than than any 10 politicians I know," said former state Sen. Robert G. Shaw. "He was proud of where he was from, and he was proud of his family." Revels was born and raised in Robeson County. His photo appeared in Life magazine in 1958 as he and a thousand armed Lumbee Indians ran the Ku Klux Klan out of the county. Revels told friends that the experience hadn't made him bitter, but optimistic. "He would tell me I'm less concerned about the bad that occurred in the past, but the good that we can do in the present," said U.S. Rep. Howard Coble of Greensboro. Revels moved to Greensboro in the early 1960s after earning a degree in political science at Wake Forest University. In 1965, Revels started his own printing firm, now called Arrowhead Graphics, which his son Bill manages. In 1983, after a series of political losses, Revels won a seat on the City Council, where he served two terms. Though busy with a family and a small business, Revels worked to gain the Lumbee tribe opportunities for economic development and education. "He never forgot," said former Gov. James E. Holshouser. "He always kept looking back over his shoulder, offering a helping hand, opening doors and creating opportunities."

Through the careful examination of four highly regarded missionaries, Professor George Tinker (Osage/Cherokee) demonstrates the inherent cultural and personal destruction implicitly (and sometimes overtly) carried with their gospel message. This poignant and well-written study is must reading for anyone concerned with the issues underlying North American theology. "The kerygmatic content of the missionary's Christian faith became confused with the accoutrements of the missionary's cultural experience and behavior." Recognizing that the four missionaries were products of their times and cultures, Tinker unmasks the symbiotic relationship of missionary and government and clearly articulates the cooperative and destructive path they forged together. This work is both scholarly and dramatic, revealing powerful insight into Christian missions among Indian people, both past and present. Missionary Conquest is essential for all those, in every denomination, who are honestly seeking to understand the political and religious history of the Americas.
