NOVEMBER IS INDIAN HERITAGE MONTH
2001
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, American Indians have inhabited the great State of North Carolina for over 10,000 years and have shared their land and their resources since initial contact with the first English settlers; and
WHEREAS, American Indians have always had a great respect for the land and the environment and continue to reside in their ancestral homelands; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina's Indian population totals over 99,551, giving the State the seventh largest Indian population in the Nation, according to Census 2000; and
WHEREAS, the social and economic well-being of the Tar Heel State has been and continues to be heavily impacted by the rich resources and contributions of American Indians; and
WHEREAS, the agricultural and
medicinal contributions made by American Indians continue to have a lasting
impact on the
economic and health status of citizens around the world; and
WHEREAS, American Indian heritage, with its beauty and cultural significance, lives and thrives among the native population today through song, dance, arts and crafts, and storytelling; and
WHEREAS, seven tribes - Coharie, Eastern Band of Cherokee, Haliwa-Saponi, Indians of Person County, Lumbee, Meherrin and Waccamaw-Siouan - are recognized by the State of North Carolina, and actively participate in local, state and national affairs;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, MICHAEL F. EASLEY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim the month of November 2001, as "INDIAN HERITAGE MONTH" in North Carolina, and urge the citizens of North Carolina to commend its observance this year and beyond.
